At the annual trick-or-treat Halloween event for kids at the White House last night, a cheeky young guest came dressed as a lame duck, giving US President Barack Obama a not-so pleasant reminder that that's what he is now, effectively, as America heads to the polls next week.
The US constitution famously doesn't allow Presidents to hold office for more than two terms. This means that a second-term President is often considered ineffectual in the last year of their office. That is, a lame duck. Obama has been battling that tag for months now.
In pictures of yesterday's event posted on Twitter, Obama is seen sportingly standing next to the 'lame duck'. His rueful expression, though, conveys more than any words can, even for the brilliant speaker that he is.
The US President didn't stay morose for long though, as soon after, it was time to dance to Michael Jackson's Thriller, something he and Michelle Obama threw themselves into with great gusto.
More than 4,000 people were expected to visit the White House for Halloween, including students from District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia schools, according to the White House, reported thehill.com.
The president and first lady handed out a variety of treats to children, including White House Hershey Kisses and M&Ms, cookies and kettle corn. The snack list also included fruit bars, an homage to Michelle Obama's healthy eating initiative.
